Sandy Hook School Shooting : Updates

Recent news: In the days before the massacre, the mother of Adam Lanza was pushing her loner son to leave the Newtown home that provided his refuge from reality, a family friend told the Daily News Wednesday. But the 20-year-old rejected the idea and stopped speaking to his mother, the friend said. Nancy Lanza and her youngest son hadn’t talked for three days before he fatally shot her Friday morning and then murdered 20 children and six staffers at Sandy Hook Elementary School. When the mother pressed the issue of moving away, “he didn’t want to leave,” according to the pal. “He didn’t understand why she wanted him to go out into the world. She told me she couldn’t reach him — and she was worried.”

Recent news: Newton school staff, Shari Thornberg tells her survival story on the day Adam Lanza killed the children and the adults.Shari Thornberg says she was running late and fears she passed the gunman when she walked through the parking lot to the front doors of Sandy Hook Elementary School at 9:30 Friday morning. That was the time, police say, that 20-year-old Adam Lanza entered the school for an attack. Thornberg says she was told by school staff that the gunman entered the principal's office and left after seeing no one there. That’s where Sally Cox, the nurse and the office worker were hiding under desks, and Sally Cox could see the gunman's pants leg. The gunman went down the left hallway. Hochsprung, the principal and school psychologist Mary Sherlach were killed, and a teacher whom police have not yet identified was wounded, when they went into the hallway from a conference room, Thornberg says. The injured teacher crawled back into the room where at least three other adults were inside, and they locked the door.A substitute kindergarten teacher, whom police also have not identified, was slightly wounded further down the hallway. The gunman, Thornberg says, did not enter the first classroom on the left where the teacher, Kaitlin Roig, had piled 16 first-graders on top of one another in the bathroom.

Recent news: Peter Wlasuk, the plumber who worked in the Lanza's house revealed that Adam Lanza spent his time in the basement of the family's four bedroom home, playing video games such as Call of Duty and obsessing over guns and military equipment. Call of Duty is controversial because of its violent content. "It was a beautiful house but he lived in the basement. I always thought that was strange" said Mr. Wlasuk." But he had a proper set up down there-computers, a bathroom, bed, desk and a TV. There were no windows".

Recent news: Six of the children killed in the shooting massacre at Sandy Hook school were gunned down as they made a brave escape attempt, it emerged today. The first-graders had been hidden in a closet by teacher Victoria Soto when the first gunshots rang out at the elementary School in Newtown on Friday morning. When the gunman entered the classroom looking for the children, he came face-to-face with 27-year-old Miss Soto who tried to throw him off by saying the children were in the auditorium at the other end of the building. However six of the children then tried to run from their hiding place and were shot dead by the gunman. Miss Soto and a teacher's aide were also killed.

Recent news: The hero music teacher who saved 20 children from being shot dead by the Newtown killer has revealed that she kept them quiet by saying prayers and telling them: ‘I love you’. Maryrose Kristopik said she barricaded herself into the closet with the nine and 10-year-olds while gunman Adam Lanza, 20, reportedly battered on the door screaming: ‘Let me in! Let me in!’ In an exclusive interview with MailOnline, she revealed that only when the shots which had been ringing out had died down did she lead them all outside to safety. Mrs Kristopik said:  I told them that I loved them. I said there was a bad person in the school. I didn't want to tell them anything past that. One door had several instruments, including big xylophones, blocking it, she said. Mrs Kristopik said she was standing in front of the other door and holding the handle to keep the children out of harm's way.

Twenty-seven people, including 20 children and the gunman were shot dead, at Sandy Hook elementary school in Newton, Connecticut, making it one of the worst school shootings in U.S. history. News of the shooting was first reported shortly after 10 a.m on 15th December 2012.The suspect in the shooting has been identified by authorities as Adam Lanza, 20, the Washington Post said. Police said that Lanza first apparently killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at the home they shared in Newtown. Adam Lanza shot his mother four times in the head while she was in her pajama in her bed on that fateful Friday morning. Then he drove in her car to the school. In the car, authorities said, were three guns: a .223 caliber "Bushmaster" rifle and two pistols, a Sig Sauer and a Glock.
Adam Lanza, The Gunman

On 15th December 2012, Lanza shot his mother, Nancy Lanza, to death at the home they shared, then drove to Sandy Hook Elementary School. The reason why he shot his mother first is still unknown. Dressed all in black on the day of the massacre, he forced his way into the elementary school. Authorities said Adam Lanza had no criminal history, and it was not clear whether he had a job. Lanza was believed to have suffered from a personality disorder, said a law enforcement official who spoke on condition of anonymity. Another law enforcement official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said Lanza had been diagnosed with Asperger’s, a mild form of autism often characterized by social awkwardness.People with the disorder are often highly intelligent. While they can become frustrated more easily, there is no evidence of a link between Asperger’s and violent behavior, experts say.
Adam Lanza has been described in local media reports as a thin, quiet and mild-mannered young man who made the honour roll while in high school. Alex Israel, a former classmate of Adam Lanza's, told CNN he was a quiet loner and "reserved" and that "you could definitely tell he was a genius."Lanza appears to have kept a low profile throughout his life. US media report that unusually, his high school yearbook of 2010 contained no photograph of him."Camera shy" was the comment by his entry.Unlike the majority of his peers, Lanza apparently had no Facebook page, his online footprint was minimal. Lanza who was described by his neighbours and former classmates as being very bright, took siz classes at Western Connecticut State University in 2008 and 2009,bbeginning when he was just 16, and had a grade point average of 3.26. Lanza took courses in computer science, such as website design, the computer language called BASIC, and data modeling, as well as in philosophy, American history and economics.
In the most  recent news, the gunman (Adam Lanza) shot himself death as the 1st responders closed in, raising the possibility that he had planned an even more gruesome massacre and was stopped short.

Nancy Lanza, the mother of the gunman and his brother Ryan Lanza, is believed to be the 1st victim on the day of the shooting. She divorced her husband Peter Lanza in 2009,  Peter Lanza, moved to Stamford, Connecticut, and remarried three years later. She was a gun enthusiast, who often took her sons with her to the shooting range. Adam Lanza is believed to have used her legally purchased weapons to carry out his attack. 52-year-old Nancy Lanza, had five weapons registered to her, including a Glock, a Sig Sauer, and a Bushmaster rifle. It also emerged that Mrs Lanza had spoken of her fears less than a week before the attack that she was “losing” her son. “She said it was getting worse. She was having trouble reaching him,” said a friend of Mrs Lanza who did not want to be named.CBS News' Pat Milton reports source briefed on the investigation said Nancy Lanza was demanding of her children. Even though Adam was highly intelligent, she pressed him to high standards and even pressed her sons to measure up at the shooting range where she taught them to shoot, the source said.

Here are the final moments of Lanza's life, as recounted by CBS News' Miller:
"The first police officer on the scene was confronted by the glass window that Lanza had shot his way through to get past the locked door. The officer advanced into the school and saw the gunman, from a great distance down a long hallway, perhaps a couple of hundred feet. The gunman, dressed all in black, spotted the officer and ducked into a room off the hallway. As the officer, now joined by a partner began to rush down the hall toward the gunman they heard a volley of shots. When they got there, they found the gunman, dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Just beyond the gunman, in a classroom, children huddled together, and their teacher, all of them shot multiple times. Nearby, in a bathroom another group of children, huddled together, all shot multiple times. It appears that the gunman let go a last volley of shots at his victims before killing himself with a single bullet to the head."

You are what you eat: The ants abdomens show exactly the color of what they've been eating

Scientist Dr. Mohamed Babu from Mysore captured some stunning pictures of ants sipping on coloured-sugar drops and the ants' semi-transparent abdomens changing colour. The saying 'you are what you eat' is true for these insects. Mohamed Babu set up the photographs after his wife, Shameem, showed him some ants had turned white after drinking spilt milk. He gave the creatures the brightly coloured sugar drops and watched as their transparent stomachs matched the food they were eating. By placing them on a paraffin base the drops kept their shape when touched by the ants. Some of the ants even wandered from one colour to another, creating new combinations in their bodies. The 53-year-old discovered the ants preferred lighter colours such as yellow and green.

Much recently, in June 2012, XinXiang Chinese residents were left terrified after spotting a bizarre creature that looks like a genetically modified pig or a strangely coloured mini-horse. The creature had strange-coloured skin and hairless body also slightly resembling a pig convincing the residents that it could be a mistake of genetic experiment. However, police discovered that the creature is actually a very expensive breed of dog called a Chinese crested hairless dog. The alien breed is known to regularly feature as a contender in the annual World's Ugliest Dog contest held in California. Nadya Suleman, the Octomom

Nadya Denise Doud-Suleman Gutierrez known as Octomom in the media, is an American woman who came to international attention when she gave birth to octuplets in January 2009. The only child of a high school teacher and a Realtor, she always hoped to have a large family of her own. The Suleman octuplets are only the second full set of octuplets to be born alive in the United States and, one week after their birth, surpassed the previous worldwide survival rate for a complete set of octuplets set by the Chukwu octuplets in 1998.

She conceived the octuplets and her six older children via in vitro fertilisation (IVF). Nadya Suleman came one step closer to starting a family of her own in 1996 when she married Marcos Gutierrez. Unfortunately, she and her husband could not conceive children. Upon closer examination, doctors discovered she had lesions in her fallopian tubes, thereby further complicating her attempts to become pregnant. Nadya Suleman never abandoned her dream of having children. She began saving for in vitro fertilization (IVF) by working around the clock as a psychiatric technician at Metropolitan State Hospital in Norwalk, California. She had already saved enough money for several procedures by 1999 when she suffered a severe lower back injury in a riot at the hospital. The ensuing trauma left her unable to work, and she began receiving disability payments. She also fell into a deep depression which, coupled with her inability to conceive children, led to the termination of her marriage in 2000.

Nadya Suleman convinced a platonic friend to donate his sperm and, on May 18, 2001, she finally gave birth to a baby boy named Elijah. Suleman underwent another IVF treatment soon after, and 13 months later gave birth to a little girl named Amerah. And she didn’t stop there. Another IVF treatment resulted in the birth of a second boy named Joshua in August of 2003, Aidan in 2005 and twins Caleb and Calyssa in 2006, giving her a total of six children in just five and a half years. Nadya Suleman made another life-changing decision the following year when she opted to use the frozen embryos left over from the batch that produced her twins. In June of 2008, she was informed that all six embryos had been successfully transferred.

Nadya Suleman’s pregnancy progressed well until the fifth month when the extraordinary weight of the fetuses snapped several of her ribs, forcing her to go on bed rest. She was then brought into hospital at 30 weeks for an emergency C-section after doctors expressed concern that one of the babies was not growing. Suleman was still in for one more major surprise when doctors discovered she was carrying eight babies and not seven as previously thought, meaning that two of her six embryos had resulted in twins.

1year old octuplets

2 yrs old
Public reaction to the birth was at first positive until news started to leak that Nadya Suleman was unmarried, unemployed and already had six other children under the age of eight. Nadya Suleman’s babies have since become the longest surviving octuplets in U.S. history.

Giant tangerine tree from China costs RM8,888

In Johor Bahru, Malaysia, five people have so far forked out RM8,888 each for three-metre tall tangerine trees imported from China. The trees are being sold at Katsura Landscape and its shop manager, who only wanted to be known as Wong, justified the price as the trees are very special. The tangerine trees commonly available in the market are smaller in size. These trees are exclusive only to this shop. Moreover, the number eight is an auspicious number – that is why the trees are priced at RM8,888.Tangerines are believed to bring good luck to those who display the plants in their homes especially during Chinese New Year.

German Woman Lived without money for 15 years

Heidemarie Schwermer, a 69-year-old woman from Germany, gave up using money 15 years ago and says she’s been much happier ever since. Schwermer worked as a middle-aged secondary school teacher emerging from a difficult marriage. In Germany’s Ruhr area, she opened a Tauschring (swap shop), called “Gib und Nimm” (Give and Take). Her small venture was a place where anyone could trade stuff and skills for other things and skills they needed, without a single coin or banknote changing hands. Old clothes could be traded in return for kitchen appliances, and car service rendered in return for plumbing services, and so on.

She started to realize she was living with a lot of stuff she didn’t really need and initially decided not to buy anything else without giving something away. Then she realized how unhappy she was with her work and made the connection between this feeling and the physical symptoms (backache and constant illness) she was feeling, so she decided to take up other jobs.  By 1995, the Tauschring had changed her life so much that she was spending virtually nothing, as everything she needed seemed to find its way into her life. So in 1996, she took the biggest decision of her life: to live without money. All of her belongings fit into a single-back suitcase and a rucksack, she has emergency savings of €200 and any other money she comes across, she gives away. Heidemarie doesn’t even have health insurance as she didn’t want to be accused of stealing from the state, and says she relies on the power of self-healing whenever she gets a little sick. Schwermer has written two books about her experience of living without money and asked her publisher to give the money to charity so it can make many people happy instead of just one.
